Our Karate Legacy

Our Mission

Traditional Shito Ryu Karatedo Australia is a dojo nestled in Lake Macquarie, NSW, dedicated to imparting the Shito Ryu style of authentic Okinawan karate.

Our karate school is proudly run by Sensei Neil Smith and Sensei Charlotte Smith, who are committed to creating a supportive and disciplined training environment for students of all ages and skill levels.

Under the guidance of head instructor Soke Yusuke Onaga and his wife sensei Chieko from Okinawa, we place strong emphasis on preserving the time-honoured traditions, techniques, and philosophy of Shito Ryu Karate-Do.

Our training not only focuses on physical skill and self-defence, but also encourages personal growth, confidence, and respect.

At our dojo, students are given the opportunity to develop both mentally and physically, building strong character while becoming part of a welcoming and dedicated martial arts community.

“Our dojo provides a nurturing environment where students develop discipline, respect, and strong martial arts skills while connecting with Okinawan cultural heritage. We believe that smaller classes lead to better learning, and we strive to have two senseis present in each lesson to provide more personalised guidance.”

About Shito Ryu Karate

Shito Ryu Karate

Shitō-ryū karate is one of the major traditional styles of Okinawan karate, founded in the early 20th century by Kenwa Mabuni. Mabuni was born in Okinawa and trained under two legendary masters: Ankō Itosu, known for developing structured teaching methods, and Kanryō Higaonna, who emphasized powerful, rooted techniques.

As karate spread from Okinawa to mainland Japan in the 1920s and 1930s, Mabuni established Shitō-ryū as a formal system, promoting both its cultural heritage and practical effectiveness. Today, Shitō-ryū is practiced worldwide and is respected for its balance of speed, precision, and deep connection to traditional Okinawan roots.
